  3. Webcelerator needs to intercept network requests before they are honored so
  4. that it can see network requests originating on your machine. It does this
  5. in one of two ways: the proxy method, or the transparent method. Depending
  6. on your other installed network software, one or both methods will work on
  7. your machine.

  9. Handling Proxy Method Problems
  10.  
  11. If you experience problems running Webcelerator using the proxy method, your
  12. proxy may be mis-configured. If you have problems using a proxy on your
  13. machine, make sure that its settings are of the form 127.0.0.1:PORT_NUMBER.
  14. Webcelerator will get confused when the IP address is something other than
  15. 127.0.0.1:PORT_NUMBER if the proxy is installed on your machine and not on
  16. another machine on your network. For example if you are using the proxy
  17. method and the proxy is configured with a name and not an IP address,
  18. Webcelerator will become confused and not work properly. You must use an IP
  19. address followed by a colon followed by PORT_NUMBER when you configure your
  20. proxy.

  22. Handling Transparent Method Problems
  23.  
  24. If you have problems running Webcelerator using the transparent method, you
  25. may have other software installed that is conflicting with Webcelerator. If
  26. switching to the proxy method does not fix the problem, please take note of
  27. which other network programs you have installed on your machine and send the
  28. list to Acceleration Software for tech support. In many cases, we can help,
  29. but please be advised that we have no control over the behavior of software
  30. that was not written by us. However, the transparent method is new in
  31. Webcelerator and may cause some problems. In order to provide you with the
  32. best possible program, we need to know which programs are causing problems.

  34. You must close all network applications, including web browsers, email
  35. clients, and network time synchronizers before you run the Webcelerator
  36. setup program. Webcelerator is best installed after a normal boot with no
  37. other applications running.

  39. If the Webcelerator control panel does not appear after you install the
  40. program, you must run Webcelerator from the Windows Start menu.
  41.  
  42. If you have problems with any particular site, we have included a file,
  43. EXCLUDE.TXT that you can edit to fix the problem. Below are the instructions 
  44. for editing this file.
  45.  
  46. Use EXCLUDE.TXT to specify the handling of specific sites.
  47. This is useful to work around specific site problems such as the need
  48. to log in to a site, the site does not load correctly, you want to
  49. censor the site, or you do not care to wait for refreshed pages when the
  50. the site changes.

  52. You may edit and add to this file.  Enter one domain or site name per line.
  53. You may have one or more modifying parameters after each name.
  54. There needs to be a space between the domain name and the parameters, but no
  55. space between individual parameters.  If no parameter is given, the default 
  56. is p.

  59.  The following is an outline of available parameters:
  60.  
  61. d - Censor. This option will allow no data to flow from this site. Instead,
  62.     Webcelerator will load a blank page for that site.
  63.  
  64. b - Pass-Thru. This option will not prefetch or cache any data from this site. 
  65.     This site will be treated as if Webcelerator was not enabled.  Data will
  66.     pass directly to the browser.

  68. p - Don't Show and Verify. This option will disable the "Show and Verify"
  69.     mode for this site if you have "Show and Verify" enabled globally.
  70.     Reloading or revisiting this site will load the newer version of the page
  71.     (if the page has changed) from the internet first, and then display the
  72.     changed data in the browser. This overrides the default, which is to show
  73.     the cached data in the browser, check for any changes in the background,
  74.     and then force the browser to reload with the new data only if the page
  75.     has changed.

  77. v - Don't verify. This option will disable the verification process for this
  78.     site if you have show and verify enabled globally. Reloading or
  79.     revisiting this site will simply load any data from Webcelerator's cache
  80.     and not check for newer versions of stored files.

  82. r - Don't reload. This option will disable the automatic reloading of the
  83.     browser window when this site has changed in show and verify mode.

  85. a - Don't prefetch.  Webcelerator will not prefetch anything from a site with
  86.     this flag.
  87.  
  88. For the parameters, lower case letters cause the action listed, and upper-
  89. case letters will undo it.  For example, your global setting (set through
  90. the Webcelerator menus) may enter here "market.net p" to cause that domain to ONLY show
  91. already verified and updated pages.  But then you may add  "market.net/admin/ P"
  92. to return that sub-domain to the global setting, and you may add 
  93. "market.net/admin/picks.htm b" to never cache that single page.

  95. Please note that these parameters are to DISABLE global features.  They 
  96. cannot add features that have not been set globally.  Therefore you cannot
  97.  cause "Show and verify" setting when "Show and verify" is not 
  98. selected globally.

  100. Some of the URLs already contained in your Exclude.txt are advertising 
  101. sites coded "ar" so that their advertisements will not be prefetched or
  102. will not cause a reload.  Others are business data sites with the default "p" setting 
  103. so that only the verified version is displayed.
